Friends You Haven’t Met: Kickball

10 Sep

I’m not particularly known for my optimism, but nevertheless, one of my favorite quotes is “Strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet.” I think that needs to be any new DC resident’s mantra. And the good news is that DC has plenty of other people in the same boat as you.

One surefire way to make new friends is to join WAKA Kickball. Tons of people are on a WAKA team–for most people it’s just an excuse to meet people and go to bars afterward–though I’ve been told there are a few teams that do take it more seriously. There’s also Happy Hour Kickball (as well as Happy Hour Dodgeball and Happy Hour Bowling) and NAKID Kickball & Social Club (NAKID stands for No, Adult Kickball Isn’t Dumb).

And there’s other options too, thanks to United Social Sports, which has leagues for skeeball, bocce, bar-skee and cornhole. The DC Bocce League is also pretty popular.

If sports really just aren’t your thing, there’s FART in DC, aka Faux Athletic Recreational Tournaments. They organize games of Connect Four, shufflepuck, four square, hide and seek, cornhole and mini golf. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like they’ve had any events for awhile, so I’m not sure what’s going on, but hopefully they’ll start up again soon.

Thanks for the WAKA kickball mention! If any of your readers have questions about signing up or finding the division closest to them, I am happy to help!
